I had to pull the tomatoes in last night, 40 degrees is a bit too chilly. My rule of thumb for tomatoes is 45 degrees+. They really like 50+, but if it’s going to be 45 or less, and my tomatoes are planted, I put a bucket, plastic, or cloth over them to keep off the chill. Think of it like how you like a blanket when it’s a little chilly!
